6 Things to Consider When Buying Laptop

This is a detailed guide on the 6 most important things to consider when buying laptop.

Whether you are shopping for a new laptop or replacing the one you have, getting a good laptop is something you need to take into consideration.

We understand that there are a lot of laptops in the market, and it can really be very confusing when deciding to pick one.

There are different things people look out for in a computer. Hence, what may be good for one person, may not be good for another.

This is why choosing a laptop for someone else might be very difficult.

That notwithstanding, when shopping for a laptop, there are a few things you must consider.

In this article, we will outline the top 6 things to consider when buying laptop

6 Things to Consider When Buying Laptop

Here are the 6 things you must consider before you buy a laptop.

1. CPU – Central Processing Unit

The first thing to consider when buying a laptop is the processor. The processor of your preferred laptop is not something you want to overlook.

Every processor has a clock speed which is measured in gigahertz (GHz).

The CPU which stands for Central Processing Unit or the Main Processor is traditionally known as the Processor of a computer.

A laptop processor is the major component of that laptop, as it is regarded as the brain of the computer.

There are basically 2 types of processors in a laptop: AMD and Intel. These  2 processor types are good. However, it might interest you to know that Intel offers a little better performance with more price.

That is to say that laptops with Intel processor cost more than those with AMD processors. The AMD processor generates much heat, hence, it is not good for regions with a hot climate.

However, our focus for the sake of this article will be on Intel processors.

There are different types of Intel processors: Intel Atom, Intel Celeron, Intel Pentium, and the Intel Core. The Intel Core is made up of Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, and Intel Core i9.

If your interest in getting a laptop is just for simple tasks like surfing the web, emails, and typing of documents with the Microsoft Office Applications, then you might want to pick a dual-core processor.

Intel Pentium processor will do just fine for you because dual-core processors are good for multitasking.

However, if what you need is a laptop for things like playing games, photo editing, etc, then you need a laptop with a higher processor like the Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5 or Core i7.

Intel Core Processors offer higher and better performance when it comes to multitasking, gaming, photo, and video editing. Basically, the higher the Cores, the higher the performance will be.

I recommend Core i5 processors for your photo editing, multitasking, and gaming. Core i7 will offer better performance than the Core i5.

However, Core i7 is more expensive, and generate much heat. This should be a concern for you if you have an intention to be using the laptop on your lap most of the time.

2. Size

The size of a laptop is one of the things to consider when buying laptop. Laptop size ranges from 11-12 inches, 13-14 inches, 15-16 inches, and 17-18 inches.

If portability is your priority in a laptop, then you should consider a laptop with screen sizes from 12-14 inches as they tend to be thinner and lighter.

However, if you need a laptop with a larger screen, then consider one with 15.6 inches. Note that, laptop with this kind of size may not be good for you if you plan on carrying the laptop around often.

3. RAM

The Random Access Memory- RAM is what allows you to run more than one application and information at the same time.

More RAM allows for more applications to run at a time. The RAM size is very important when choosing a laptop. Though, RAM can be upgraded much later.

The minimum RAM you want to get is 4GB. This will allow you to handle basic tasks like surfing the net, checking email, typing documents, etc.

However, if you intend to do photo or video editing with the laptop, or you intend to play games with it, the 8GB RAM should be the minimum.

If you need more RAM, get 16GB or 32GB of RAM for higher efficiency. However, like I pointed out earlier, you can always upgrade your RAM to a higher one later.

One thing you should keep in mind when going for a higher RAM is that the higher the RAM the higher the battery consumption.

4. Storage Drive

There are two types of storage drive: the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and the Solid State Drive (SSD).

The HDD stores information on spinning metal disk. HDD is less expensive. However, they are a little noisy and use a lot of power too.

The SSD, on the other hand, offers more performance, consume less power and are faster. Though the setback with the SSD is that they are usually very expensive.

For instance, the cost of a laptop with SSD of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB can get you a laptop with HDD of 1TB or even 2TB.

If you can afford a laptop with an SSD, then its definitely worth going for, but if you are on a budget and need a laptop with more storage, then the traditional HDD won’t be a bad idea.

5. Battery Life

Depending on your intent on getting a laptop, battery life is one of the things to consider when buying a Laptop.

If you plan on using the laptop on your lap or go around with it more often, then the minimum battery life you should consider is 4 hours, unless you are sure of an uninterrupted power supply 24/7.

However, when picking a laptop, don’t just take the manufacturer word for the battery life, read online reviews based on people that have used it before.

One thing you must know is that there are a few things that also affect your battery life.

The level of screen brightness, screen resolution, number of applications running in the background, streaming online videos, playing high games, constant Wifi connection, etc, can cause your battery to drain faster than normal.

6. Brand

Considering the laptop brand is good when picking a laptop. There are great companies that produced great laptops.

HP, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Microsoft, Huawei, Apple, and Samsung are all great brands. You can be sure that any laptop you pick from these brands, will give you what you seek.
